Clinical Setting

Male child. 12 yo. Progressive muscular weakness. CK normal

Pathology

Microscopy

HE shows fascicles and groups of atrophic and hypertrophic fibers.

Type grouping is observed with enzymatic techniques ATPase, with selective type I hypertrophy.

Proposed diagnosis

Denervation (neurogenic) atrophy, consistent with a Spinal Muscular Atrophy (type III).
